Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Teeth are the last teeth to grow, they are our third molars, and usually begin to erupt when a person is in their late teens or early 20s. There are usually four wisdom teeth, but some people have less, or even none, and others may have more. If they have not begun to erupt by age 25, they probably won’t.

During the evolution of humans, our ancestors had larger jaws and their teeth had to grind up plant material prior to the invention of cooking.  Imagine what eating raw rice all your life would do to your teeth.

Wisdom Teeth became redundant when humans moved to cooking food and a softer diet and especially as dental hygiene improved and people lost fewer teeth during their lifetime.

Most people do not have any trouble when their Wisdom Teeth come through, but a large proportion do present problems and they require dental health care.
