]]> A cephalometric x-ray, which is also sometimes called a cephalo or ceph, is an x-ray used for dental treatment planning.

Having a cephalometric x-ray is pretty straightforward. Concentrating on the side view of the head the x-ray technician positions the patient according to the area to be examined when taking a cephalometric x-ray.

The exposure takes approximately 10 seconds and the x-ray is developed in approximately five to six minutes.
When it is developed the dentist will “trace the ceph” in order to calculate how the patient’s jaw and surrounding bone will be affected by treatment, and it also provides the dentist a look into the growth pattern of the jaw and teeth.
It is used to determine potential courses of action and methods of treatment.

]]> Dentures, also known as false teeth, are removable replacements for missing teeth. They can be full or partial.

Full Dentures replace all the teeth of the upper or lower jaw.

They are fitted about 8 to 12  weeks after having the teeth removed when the gums have completely healed.

Dentures that fit well during the first few years will not necessarily fit well for the rest of the person’s lifetime. This is because the bone and structures of the mouth are living tissues, which are change over time.

Their use is being phased out as implant technology takes over, and the need for new dentures is eliminated.

]]> An Apicetomy is a surgical operation  to remove an infection at the base of teeth which has not responded to any other treatment.

Infections in the base of teeth can be especially difficult to treat and if left can develop an abscess or cyst. This is painful and can lead to the loss of bone surrounding the root, this means the tooth will become loose and may fall out.

The operation removes the infection from the base of the tooth and jaw, and fills the area, preventing further infection.
